During the SCO summit in Samarkand, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev proposed the establishment of a special Humanitarian Support Fund for Afghanistan.

“Strengthening of coordination in promoting the establishment of peace and the socio-economic reconstruction of Afghanistan should remain among the key priorities of the SCO. I would like to especially thank my colleagues for supporting the recent Tashkent conference. The participation of the Afghan delegation, representatives of many states and international organizations, including the SCO, confirms the desire of the world community to develop coordinated approaches to cooperation with this country,” the head of state said.

Mirziyoyev stressed that “the Afghan people need our neighborly assistance more than ever”.

“We must not repeat the mistakes of the past and leave Afghanistan alone with its problems. Tightening of the sanctions policy and further isolation of the current Afghan authorities will inevitably lead to increased radicalization within the country and its transformation into a springboard for terrorist organizations,” he said.

The head of state said that Uzbekistan stands for the development of constructive contacts with Kabul to fulfill the international obligations previously adopted by the interim authorities of Afghanistan, including in the field of the rights of women and children.

“In addition, we propose to jointly establish a special Humanitarian Support Fund for Afghanistan in our border city of Termez, using the modern infrastructure of the international transport and logistics hub created there. The monies of the fund will be used to overcome the social crisis in this country, the implementation of educational programs for young people and projects in the field of healthcare,” the Uzbek President concluded.
