The Supreme Court of Uzbekistan disclosed some indicators of the activity of criminal courts throughout the republic for 2018-2022 and the first quarter of 2023.

As it turned out, from the beginning of 2018 to March 2023, a total of 11 people were sentenced to life imprisonment, the most severe punishment in the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan. At the regional scale, 5 persons from Tashkent region, 2 persons from Tashkent city and Jizzakh regions, as well as 1 person from Kashkadarya and Fergana regions were deprived of their freedom for life.

It should be noted that since January 1, 2008, the death penalty has been abolished as a type of criminal punishment in Uzbekistan, and life or long-term imprisonment has been introduced instead.

Today, only 2 articles in the Criminal Code: intentional homicide in cases of aggravated responsibility (the 2nd part of Article 97) and terrorism (the 3rd part of Article 155) are punishable by life imprisonment.

Also, life imprisonment cannot be imposed on a woman, a person who has committed a crime under the age of 18, and a man over the age of 60.
