EBRD approves $66.4 million loan for Uzbekistan's national electric grid development
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved a loan of up to $66.4 million to Uzbekistan’s National Electric Grid to finance the construction of a 230-kilometer high-voltage transmission line.
The project aims to enhance the reliability and sustainability of Uzbekistan's electricity supply by connecting the northwestern and southwestern regions of the country. The proposed 500 kV transmission line will link the Sarimay district in Khorezm region with the Muruntau area in Navoi region.
According to the EBRD, the initiative will create new opportunities for integrating renewable energy sources into Uzbekistan’s energy system while addressing network bottlenecks. This is expected to reduce power outages, especially during periods of high electricity demand.
The EBRD emphasizes that the project will simplify the integration of renewable energy sources into the national grid, paving the way for a more diversified and sustainable energy mix. This aligns with Uzbekistan’s broader energy goals, which include expanding the role of clean energy in its power supply.
To date, the EBRD has invested approximately €5.3 billion in 171 projects across Uzbekistan, supporting the country’s infrastructure, energy, and economic development.
