Uzbekistan launches pilot program for electronic prescriptions
Uzbekistan has initiated a pilot program for electronic prescriptions in the Qibray district of Tashkent region, marking a significant step in digitizing the healthcare system. The trial, announced by the Ministry of Digital Technologies, involves the district's central polyclinic and a network of eight pharmacies.
The system operates on the DMED platform, developed by Uzinfocom, a national integrator. Patients must download the DMED application, available for Android and iOS, to access the service. After a doctor issues a prescription during a consultation, a code is sent to the patient's app.
Patients can then print the prescription and present it at participating pharmacies, where pharmacists scan the QR code to dispense the required medication.
The DMED platform is designed to provide pharmacies with real-time updates on prescription issuance and medication dispensing. By automating drug selection based on their generic names, the system aims to eliminate errors and enhance efficiency.
The initiative aligns with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's directive from May 2023 to implement electronic prescription systems nationwide. This reform also includes plans for a reimbursement system to make medications more affordable for citizens.
Acting Minister of Health Asilbek Khudoyarov emphasized in July 2024 that the electronic prescription system would foster a competitive environment in healthcare and prevent doctors from prescribing unnecessary medications due to commercial interests. He confirmed plans to launch the system by the end of 2024, highlighting its role in improving access to essential medicines.
