Competition Committee: 1,300 pharmacies unjustifiably raised medication prices

The Committee for the Development of Competition and Consumer Protection identified 270,000 violations and refunded 11.6 billion UZS to overcharged consumers. Using the unified information system FAIR TECH, the Committee revealed that approximately 1,300 pharmacies in Uzbekistan had unjustifiably raised reference prices.

Among the regions, the capital city topped the list with 228 violating pharmacies, more than half of which were retail establishments. Samarkand region ranked second, with 182 pharmacies involved.

Other regions with over 100 violators include Tashkent, Namangan, Navoi, and Jizzakh. In these areas, more than half of the pharmacies were also retail sellers. The fewest violations were found in Surkhandarya region, with only 18 pharmacies.

"As a result of these inspections, 270,000 cases of unjustified income generation were identified, amounting to 11.6 billion UZS," the statement said.

The Committee has also taken steps to return the overpaid amounts to consumers. It urged pharmacies to avoid unjustified price hikes and overcharging customers.

Starting April 1, 2025, all legal entities involved in the sale of pharmaceutical products or the provision of medical services will be required to pay VAT, regardless of their income size.
