According to an official statement from the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Central Asia is projected to become one of the fastest-growing regions in the world over the next decade. This trajectory, the ministry noted, is drawing increasing investment attention from major global powers.
In light of these developments, Belgium has opted to establish a permanent diplomatic mission in Uzbekistan’s capital. Brussels highlighted the region’s expanding strategic significance, particularly with the development of the Trans-Caspian route – a modern corridor often described as a new Silk Road. The ministry emphasized that this route offers vast economic and logistical opportunities and positions Central Asia as a key geopolitical interface between China, Russia, Pakistan, India, Iran, and Afghanistan.
Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot said the establishment of an embassy in Tashkent will allow Belgium to deepen its understanding of developments abroad, identify opportunities for cooperation, and detect emerging risks and challenges.
“Our diplomatic posts allow us to understand what is happening abroad, to identify opportunities for partnerships and exchanges, and to detect and report threats and problematic situations,” Prévot stated.
The opening of the embassy marks an important step in Belgium’s renewed commitment to building stronger ties with Central Asia.
