The potential of the current Tashkent airport has not yet been exhausted, but a “fundamental decision” has already been made regarding its future.

After 2030, operations are planned to move to the new Tashkent International Airport, according to Deputy Minister of Transport Jasurbek Choriyev, who made the statement in an interview with Spot on 19 November during the third public–private partnership roundtable.

“We will gradually move to the new airport. It was initially outlined that Tashkent-South Airport (Tashkent International Airport named after Islam Karimov – ed.) is located within the city. Its potential is not yet exhausted, and it will continue to operate for at least 4–5 years. Then, as is the case in other countries, there will be a transition period when airlines gradually shift to the new base,” he said.

According to Choriyev, as Tashkent grows, so does the number of cars and passengers seeking the most convenient travel and transport infrastructure options. “It will be convenient for everyone with the new airport,” he added.

The deputy minister clarified that, according to Ministry of Transport plans, the start of the transition period to the new airport is scheduled for after 2030.

Answering a question about a possible closure of the current airport, Jasurbek Choriyev said that “when the time comes, it will become clear.”

“There is a fundamental decision and such plans; otherwise, a private partner would not sign a contract with us. They want full management and want all airlines to operate where they invest. Otherwise, it makes no sense,” the official emphasized.

He also noted that the capacity of the new Tashkent airport will be ten times greater than that of the current facility.
