The initiative for Uzbekistan to join the treaty was put forward by the President of Uzbekistan. After nearly a year of preparatory work and negotiations, the country’s accession was approved at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Kuala Lumpur under Malaysia’s chairmanship.

The Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia was signed on 24 February 1976 in the Indonesian city of Bali. It is considered an important document that defines the fundamental principles of cooperation within the ASEAN region.

The ASEAN region consists of 11 Southeast Asian countries with a combined population of around 700 million people.

Uzbekistan’s accession to the treaty will open new opportunities for the country in this region. It is expected to strengthen not only government-to-government cooperation, but also trade, economic and investment ties, while enhancing the confidence of major foreign companies.
