Uzbekistan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030
“Uzbekistan will take measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030,” Narodnoe Slovo reports quoting Rahmatulla Nazarov, member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Foreign Economic Relations, Foreign Investments and Tourism.
The law "On ratification of the Paris Agreement" (Paris, 12 December 2015), signed by the President, came into force yesterday.
“Uzbekistan has ratified and submitted the agreement to the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. In accordance with the agreement, Uzbekistan will strengthen measures to jointly combat the climate change. The greenhouse gas emissions in Uzbekistan will be reduced up to 10 % of its GDP by 2030,” the Senator said.
It is envisaged to introduce relevant international standards for the implementation of environmental protection measures, strengthening the legislation in the field of ecology, and furnishing new enterprises with special equipment.
"Development level of numerous sectors in Uzbekistan is not high yet. Thus, we maintain a minimum level of greenhouse gas emissions. However, due to number of factors, Uzbekistan is one of the most vulnerable countries to negative impacts of climate change according to the World Bank,” Mr. Nazarov added.
