Uzbekistan moves to increase accountability of government and regional leaders in fight against corruption

Government members and local executive officials are expected to face greater accountability in combating corruption.

At a meeting of the Ecological Party faction in the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, the draft law “On amendments and additions to certain legislative acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan” was reviewed in its first reading.

As noted during the discussion, the primary goal of the draft law is to strengthen the responsibility and accountability of government members and local executive heads in the fight against corruption, as well as to improve the effectiveness of their efforts in this area.

According to the draft law, when a candidate for the position of regional governor is being considered by the respective Council of People’s Deputies, they will be required to present not only a regional socio-economic development program but also an action plan for preventing corruption in the region.

Similarly, candidates for membership in the Cabinet of Ministers will have to submit, along with their program of activities, a plan of measures aimed at preventing corruption within the system when their nomination is reviewed and approved by the Legislative Chamber.

During the meeting, it was emphasized that the adoption of this draft law will help increase the responsibility of individuals recommended for leadership positions to carry out public service based on the principles of transparency and accountability. Following discussions, the draft law was supported.
