President Mirziyoyev sends state language law back to parliament for revision

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has returned the Law on the state language to parliament for further revision, despite it having been approved by the Senate back in 2021, in order to bring it into line with contemporary realities and global challenges. The move was announced by Alisher Kadirov, leader of the Milliy Tiklanish Democratic Party.

According to Kadirov, the president exercised his constitutional right to return the law and put forward a number of “very appropriate proposals” aimed at improving the document. Lawmakers are currently working to incorporate new provisions into the legislation.

The president emphasized the need to adapt the law to the changing values and conditions of the modern world. As Kadirov noted, at earlier stages of consideration of the draft law, the party had been unable to include several provisions it viewed as important. That opportunity has now emerged.

Speaking about the timeline for adopting the revised law, Kadirov did not provide specific dates, but stressed that the document is “critically necessary for Uzbekistan.” He also underlined that the development of the state language cannot be ensured through legislation alone, as changes in public attitudes play a decisive role.

“Even if the law is amended, these goals cannot be achieved through revisions alone. Public attitudes are gradually changing – attention to and respect for the language are growing, and a special commission has begun its work,” he said.

Kadirov separately stressed that strengthening the role of the state language does not imply any infringement of the rights of citizens who speak other languages. According to him, the right to freely choose a language of communication is enshrined in the Constitution and remains unchanged.

“In Uzbekistan, no one is subjected to discrimination on linguistic or ethnic grounds, and all nationalities are supported. At the same time, new views are being formed every day on how compliance with the law on the state language should be ensured,” the politician concluded.
