President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has met with Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom, to review the progress of work on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan and discuss the expansion of cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
According to the presidential press service, the talks focused on the practical aspects of implementing the integrated nuclear power plant project in Uzbekistan, as well as broader collaboration in the field of peaceful nuclear technologies.
The sides noted with satisfaction that construction of the first low-capacity reactor building began in October last year, marking an important milestone in the project. Design work for the nuclear power plant is currently ongoing.

It was also stressed that an advanced engineering school specializing in nuclear energy and nuclear technologies was launched in December last year on the basis of the Tashkent branch of the National Research Nuclear University “MEPhI.” The initiative is aimed at training qualified specialists and strengthening the country’s human capital in the nuclear sector.

In addition to the power generation project, the discussions placed particular emphasis on expanding cooperation in the application of nuclear technologies in agriculture and healthcare. The sides expressed readiness to further develop joint efforts in personnel training, scientific research, and the implementation of socially oriented projects.
