Speaking at a meeting held at the regional administration, the president said that, together with partners, specialists had developed a scientific approach to resolve the issue at the large gas processing complex known as M-25.

“We will stop the accident and at the same time launch a project that will give a major boost to the economy of Surkhandarya,” Mirziyoyev said.

During the meeting, it was also announced that project work would begin to extend sewage systems to the district centers of Muzrabot, Oltinsoy, Angor, Kizirik and Boysun.

Series of incidents at the gas field

The emergency at the “Mustaqillikning 25 yilligi” gas field began on September 1, 2024, during drilling operations at well No. 604 located in the Kulqamish neighborhood of Kofrun settlement in Boysun district. Hydrogen sulfide gas started leaking from the well, prompting the evacuation of Kofrun residents on September 2.

Efforts to seal the well were unsuccessful. On September 17, another accident occurred, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuries to 11 others.

A further explosion took place at the field on March 27, 2025. The Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan reported at the time that the well had been set on fire in order to prevent environmental damage and reduce air pollution.

On April 24, videos circulated on messaging platforms showing that the opening of well No. 202, from which gas had been escaping, had reportedly sealed itself. However, on May 5, another explosion was recorded at the same well.

Authorities have not yet disclosed further technical details regarding the newly identified scientific solution, but the president expressed confidence that both the emergency response and future development plans for the region would proceed simultaneously.
