Uzbekistan targets 30% green coverage with new legislative funding initiative
Uzbekistan is set to allocate UZS 412 million to every member of the Legislative Chamber to establish green zones within their respective constituencies.
On April 1, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev proposed boosting participation by residents and legislators in developing green spaces across the regions.
Funding under the "My Garden" program is scheduled to increase from UZS 250 million to UZS 400 million per project. Up to one hectare of land will be designated for each green garden and public park. These sites will be selected by residents in proximity to their residences and will be equipped with a water supply.
Mirziyoyev made the announcement during a tree-planting event under the nationwide “Green Space" project, which envisages planting 200 million saplings annually.
Green coverage has increased from 8% to 14.2% in recent years, with a government target to raise it to 30% and expand green space per capita to 10 square meters by 2030.
Plans include large-scale afforestation projects across several regions, while regional governors will oversee the creation of botanical gardens and dendrological parks.
In Tashkent, a National Dendrological Park is being developed on 108 hectares. Around 21,000 people took part in the latest planting campaign, adding 88,000 saplings nationwide.
