Sindarov breaks records with sixth win at Candidates Tournament, moves closer to world title match
Uzbek Grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov achieved a decisive victory on April 9, defeating India’s Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa in the 10th round of the Candidates Tournament. Playing with the white pieces, Sindarov secured his second win over the Indian prodigy in this competition, having previously outperformed him with the black pieces in the first round.

This victory has allowed the Uzbek chess star to strengthen his position at the top of the standings. Sindarov now has 8 points after 10 rounds, placing him a full 2 points ahead of his closest rival, Anish Giri. Giri’s lead narrowed after he settled for a draw against Hikaru Nakamura in the same round. With this significant gap, Sindorov finds himself in a dominant position; even if he draws all four of his remaining matches, he will remain out of reach for his competitors.
Beyond the standings, Sindarov has made history by setting a new record for the most individual wins in the current format of the Candidates Tournament. By securing his sixth victory of the event, he surpassed all previous records, with the opportunity to extend this lead further in the coming days.
The tournament will observe a rest day on April 10, with the 11th round scheduled for April 11. In the upcoming matches, Sindarov will face a challenging lineup of world-class opponents, starting with Fabiano Caruana, followed by Hikaru Nakamura, Anish Giri, and Wei Yi.
The Candidates Tournament is currently being held in Peyia, Cyprus. The winner of the event will claim a 70,000-euro prize and earn the prestigious right to challenge the reigning world champion, Gukesh Dommaraju of India, for the chess crown.
