The verdict was announced on July 28 by the Shaykhantahur District Criminal Court in Tashkent. Mirzayev was tried alongside eight other defendants.
The court found Mirzayev guilty of embezzlement or misappropriation of property on an especially large scale, abuse of official authority resulting in especially large-scale damage, and official inaction.
He was sentenced to eight years and two months in prison and banned from holding certain positions for three years.
The remaining defendants, some of whom had previous criminal convictions, were found guilty under various articles of the Criminal Code, including violations of personal data protection legislation, tax evasion, breaches of trade and service regulations, and the forgery, sale or use of forged documents, stamps, seals and official forms, along with other related offenses.
They were sentenced to prison terms ranging from five to nine years.
The court also ordered the recovery of damages caused by the crimes. The prison terms will be calculated from the date on which the defendants were placed in pretrial detention.
Mirzayev was dismissed from his post in January after President Shavkat Mirziyoyev publicly criticized his "irresponsibility and negligence." At the time, the president noted that Mirzayev had served as the Tax Committee's first deputy chairman for seven years.
