UZS 22,000 in summer, UZS 550,000 in winter: what determines your gas bill?

Kun.uz and DOMO analyzed 12 months of consumption data from 3.8 million gas meters to understand what affects gas usage. In detached houses, average monthly gas consumption was 20 m³ in July and 500 m³ in January, a 25-fold increase. Tashkent recorded the highest average gas consumption per house, even though detached houses in the capital are smaller on average than those in other regions.

Based on this data, DOMO will rank households by their gas efficiency. According to the ranking results, more than 800 households will receive vouchers worth UZS 5 million and household appliances. The total value of the prizes is estimated at nearly UZS 4.3 billion.

Using 12 months of data from 3.8 million meters connected to DOMO, we calculated how gas and electricity costs vary by region, home size, and season.

The calculations are based on tariffs in effect since June 1, 2026. The data is current as of October 22, 2026.

How much does gas cost, and why do bills increase 25-fold in winter?

Gas prices depend on monthly consumption. The more gas you use, the higher the rate for consumption above the set limit. During the heating season, from November to February, the first 500 m³ of gas consumed each month costs UZS 1,100 per m³. Any consumption above 500 m³ is charged at UZS 2,000 per m³.

In March, April, and October, the monthly consumption limit drops to 100 m³. Homes may still need heating during these months, but any gas used above 100 m³ costs UZS 2,000 per m³. For example, if you use 300 m³ in March, you will pay UZS 110,000 for the first 100 m³ and UZS 400,000 for the remaining 200 m³, bringing the total to UZS 510,000.

Families in need of social assistance receive compensation for gas consumption above the basic limit, covering up to 250 m³ during the heating season and up to 150 m³ in other months. Payments are made through the National Agency for Social Protection.

In summer, gas is mainly used for cooking and heating water. In winter, it is also used to heat homes. As a result, a detached house consumes an average of 20 m³ of gas in July and 500 m³ in January.

In January, detached houses larger than 100 m² exceed the standard gas consumption limit. For example, a house that uses 600 m³ of gas pays UZS 550,000 for the first 500 m³ and UZS 200,000 for the additional 100 m³.

Saving gas in winter is much more beneficial, especially for households that exceed the consumption limit. If a detached house that uses 500 m³ of gas in January reduces its consumption by 10%, it will save 50 m³, or UZS 55,000. That is 2.5 times the entire gas bill for July. Each cubic meter saved is worth UZS 2,000.

Which region consumes the most gas?

Detached houses in Tashkent consume 2,850 m³ of gas per year, compared with 1,500 m³ in other regions. The lowest consumption is recorded in Andijan and Surkhandarya regions, at 1,000 m³ and 950 m³ per year, respectively.

The amount shown on the map represents the minimum possible annual gas bill, calculated at a rate of UZS 1,100 per m³. If gas consumption exceeds the established limit, the annual bill will be higher.

In January, gas bills in Tashkent are twice as high as in other regions. A detached house in the capital consumes 800 m³ of gas in January. The first 500 m³ costs UZS 550,000, while the additional 300 m³ costs UZS 600,000, bringing the total to UZS 1,150,000.

Houses in Tashkent are smaller but consume more gas. The average living area of detached houses in the capital is 50–60 m², compared with 80–90 m² in Jizzakh and Bukhara regions and 60–70 m² in most other regions.

Colder winters do not explain this difference. Winters in Khorezm and Karakalpakstan are colder than in Tashkent, yet households there consume 1,100 m³ less gas.

How does home size affect gas and electricity consumption?

A house three times larger consumes 1.6 times as much gas. Detached houses larger than 150 m² use 2,000 m³ of gas per year, while those measuring up to 50 m² consume 1,250 m³. This is because some gas is used for cooking and heating water, which does not depend on the size of the house.

Apartments consume less gas, averaging 330 m³ per year. Most apartment buildings are connected to central heating, so gas is mainly used for cooking.

Electricity consumption also depends on home size. A typical detached house uses 200 kWh of electricity per month, while an apartment uses 150 kWh.

How can you save gas in winter?

Seal gaps around windows and doors. Weatherstripping helps prevent cold air from entering. You can also apply insulating film to older windows.

Avoid heating rooms you don't use. Close the door and turn down the heating in those rooms.

Lower the boiler temperature at night and when no one is home. Do not reduce it below a safe level.

Have your boiler and chimney inspected before each heating season, and install a carbon monoxide detector in your home. This is about safety, not saving money.

How can you compare your gas and electricity bills with those of other households?

In January, using 500 m³ of gas is normal for an 80 m² detached house, but far too much for a 40 m² apartment. To find out whether your gas consumption is within the normal range, compare your bills with those of homes of a similar size.

Prizes for energy-efficient households. In October, DOMO began a partnership with Thermo Plus, a manufacturer of thermal insulation materials based in the Khorezm region. Each of the 832 households that rank highest will receive a voucher worth UZS 5 million and a household item worth UZS 250,000. The total value of the prizes is nearly UZS 4.3 billion. Free home insulation. Every one to two months, one DOMO user whose gas consumption is higher than that of similar homes will be selected. With the homeowner’s consent, their home will be insulated free of charge using Thermo Plus materials, and the process will be featured on Zo‘r TV. Gas consumption before and after insulation will be compared using DOMO data, and the results will be published regardless of the outcome.

About the data

The analysis is based on meter readings from DOMO's database covering October 2025 to September 2026. During this period, 3.8 million gas utility accounts were connected to DOMO.

Annual gas consumption was calculated using data from 633,000 detached houses and 130,000 apartments with meter readings available for all 12 months. Electricity consumption figures are based on data from 175,000 detached houses and 35,000 apartments. Gas consumption in January and July was analyzed using data from nearly 1.6 million detached houses. Meters connected to electric vehicle charging stations were excluded from the analysis.

A “typical household” refers to the median or average value. All figures have been rounded. Home size is based on the living area recorded in cadastral records, which includes living rooms but excludes kitchens and hallways.

Monthly bills were calculated using the tiered tariffs in effect since June 1, 2026. Annual gas bills were calculated at a flat rate of UZS 1,100 per m³ and are presented as the minimum possible amount. Compensation payments were not included in the calculations.
