Tashkent modernist monuments may be nominated for UNESCO heritage status

Uzbekistan plans to submit documentation to nominate Tashkent’s modernist architectural heritage for inclusion on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, according to a new presidential decree on tourism development. The move aims to secure international recognition for the capital’s unique collection of Soviet-era modernist monuments and its extensive mosaic art, which the government hopes to brand as the world’s most mosaic-rich city.

The decree outlines several major cultural tourism initiatives for 2026–2028. Among them is the transformation of Tashkent’s modernist sites into a globally recognized heritage cluster, highlighting the city’s artistic legacy shaped by its distinctive mosaics and monumental architecture.

A separate project will be launched in Samarkand to create a 6.6-kilometre tourist route linking the city’s most significant historical landmarks under the “Heritage Path of Samarkand” initiative. The route aims to provide a seamless visitor experience connecting cultural, historical, and urban spaces.

In Khiva, the government plans to turn the Ichan Qala complex into the world’s first immersive and “smart” museum city. The project envisions combining everyday local life, commerce, and public services with advanced digital technologies while preserving the historical fabric of the ancient inner fortress.

Implementation of these initiatives will fall under the responsibility of the Fund for the Development of Culture and Art, the Cultural Heritage Agency, and the newly restructured Tourism Committee.

Authorities say the combined projects will boost Uzbekistan’s cultural visibility, diversify tourism products, and promote long-term preservation of the country’s architectural heritage.
