Uzbekistan to roll out digital genealogy and DNA-based ancestry platform
Uzbekistan will introduce a nationwide digital platform enabling citizens to trace their family lineage and determine their ethnic origins starting from 1 September 2026. The system, called Shajara, is outlined in a presidential decree aimed at modernizing access to genealogical and civil registry records.
The platform will compile family trees using primary data from the Unified Electronic Archive of Civil Registry Offices, as well as documents stored in state and departmental archives. In addition, the system will offer the option of identifying ethnic background through DNA analysis provided by the Republican Forensic Examination Center named after Kh. Sulaymonova.
According to the decree, Shajara will allow users to access birth, marriage, and death records, search for distant relatives based on genetic data, and explore multigenerational family connections. The integration of DNA services is expected to enhance the precision of genealogical information, particularly in cases where archival documents are incomplete or missing.
Genealogy services will be delivered through Public Service Centers and the Unified Portal of Interactive Public Services (my.gov.uz) and will cover three historical periods:
- from the 9th century to 1917
- from 1918 to 1945
- from 1946 to the present
Authorities say the new system will make family history research more accessible, improve the preservation of archival data, and open new avenues for individuals seeking to better understand their ancestral roots.
