The agreements were reached during a visit to Uzbekistan by a Syrian delegation led by Mohammad Nidal al-Shaar, Syria’s Minister of Economy and Industry.
Al-Shaar held talks with Laziz Kudratov, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Investment, Industry and Trade. The discussions focused on attracting investment, developing industrial and trade projects, and Uzbekistan’s experience in simplifying the process for investors, from identifying opportunities to implementing projects.
Following the talks, the two ministries signed a memorandum on establishing the Joint Economic and Trade Committee. The body will facilitate information exchange, identify new business opportunities, address issues arising between companies and prepare proposals to expand trade and economic cooperation.
Committee meetings are expected to be held annually, alternating between Uzbekistan and Syria, with private-sector representatives taking part.
The Syrian delegation also reviewed Uzbekistan’s experience in industrial development and discussed adapting some of its approaches to Syria’s needs, including improving industrial competitiveness and increasing production.
Uzbek-Syrian business forum
The Uzbek-Syrian Business Forum was held in Tashkent on September 19, bringing together representatives of more than 30 major Syrian companies.
The companies represented a range of sectors, including textiles, pharmaceuticals, food processing, chemicals, agriculture, construction materials and electrical engineering.
The sides also discussed cooperation in exhibitions and trade fairs. Muhammad Hamza, director general of Syria’s General Directorate of Exhibitions and International Markets, discussed plans to hold a Made in Uzbekistan exhibition in Damascus, establish national pavilions at exhibitions in both countries, and organize economic forums and direct business-to-business meetings.
