US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo will visit Ukraine on January 31, Buzz Feed reports, citing a source in the State Department.
During the visit, Pompeo plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In an interview for Bloomberg TV, Pompeo himself confirmed that he is going to visit Ukraine soon.
“Yes, I am going to Ukraine. I had planned this before. But there were problems in the Middle East, and I had to deal with them. Although these problems have not been fully resolved, I am planning to visit Ukraine soon,” he said.
US Secretary of State noted that “Ukraine is located on the eastern edge of Europe, between democracy and tyranny”. According to him, the US is responsible for helping to secure the sovereignty of this state.
“We always deal with democracy everywhere. America has a number of interests in Ukraine.
We will provide them with weapons, so that they are able to protect themselves. We support the new Ukrainian leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, in his efforts to eradicate corruption and strengthen democracy,” Pompeo added.
It should be recalled that Pompeo planned to visit Tashkent on January 5-6 as part of his tour along Eastern Europe and Central Asia. However, the visit was postponed due to conflicts with Iran in the Middle East. It is not yet known when he will arrive in Uzbekistan.
