Uzbekistan’s universities see growing international enrollment, led by South Asian students
According to the Statistics Agency, the 2023/2024 academic year has seen a significant presence of foreign students, with Indian nationals representing the largest group enrolled in Uzbek higher education institutions. A total of 5,733 students from India are currently pursuing studies in Uzbekistan, underscoring strong educational ties between the two countries.
Following Indian students, Pakistan ranks second, with 1,358 students studying in Uzbekistan. Turkmenistan comes third with 904 students, indicating a notable representation of Central Asian nations. Russian students make up a significant portion as well, with 750 enrolled, followed by students from Kazakhstan at 537.
Other countries with a notable student presence include:
- Tajikistan – 285 students,
- Kyrgyz Republic – 285 students,
- Afghanistan – 196 students,
- China – 182 students,
- South Korea – 176 students, and
- Canada – 124 students.
An additional 315 students hail from various other countries, reflecting the diversity of international students in Uzbekistan’s higher education landscape.
Uzbekistan’s appeal as a study destination for foreign students has grown in recent years, driven by the country’s expanding academic programs, enhanced infrastructure, and collaborative partnerships with international educational institutions. These developments are part of Uzbekistan’s broader strategy to increase its global academic standing and promote intercultural exchanges through education.
The presence of a diverse foreign student body is also fostering a multicultural academic environment in Uzbekistan, enriching both domestic and international students’ learning experiences.
