Supreme Court reports sharp toll of drug convictions nationwide
More than 2,600 people have been jailed in Uzbekistan since the beginning of the year over drug offenses.
According to the press service of the Supreme Court, over the past 11 months of this year, 14 people were convicted under Article 271 of the Criminal Code – illegal seizure of narcotic drugs, their analogues, or psychotropic substances. Of these, 13 were sentenced to imprisonment, while one received a sentence of restriction of liberty.
In 2024, 19 people were convicted under the same article, including 17 who were sentenced to imprisonment and two who received restriction of liberty.
Under Article 273 of the Criminal Code – illegal manufacture, acquisition, storage, and other actions involving narcotic drugs, their analogues, or psychotropic substances with intent to sell, as well as their sale – 2,875 people have been convicted since the beginning of the year. Of them, 2,650 were sentenced to imprisonment, while 225 received alternative forms of punishment.
Compulsory medical measures were applied to five individuals.
Last year, 3,020 people were convicted under Article 273. Among them, 2,806 were sentenced to imprisonment, while 214 received non-custodial penalties, including fines, corrective labor, restriction of liberty, and suspended sentences. Compulsory medical measures were applied to eight individuals.
