Satellite data reveals significant economic growth and urbanization across Uzbekistan
Between 2020–2025, a total of 44 districts in Uzbekistan transitioned to a stage of urban-style development, according to a report by the Center for Economic Research and Reforms (CERR). An analysis conducted by the Center using satellite data indicates that economic activity and infrastructure development in these areas have increased significantly.

According to the results of the analysis, GDP per capita has grown by more than 80% over the last five years, reaching nearly $3,900. It was noted that these figures almost entirely align with official statistics, demonstrating that satellite data can serve as a reliable source for assessing economic processes.
Regional economic performance
In terms of regional breakdown, the highest growth was observed in Tashkent city, where the Gross Regional Product (GRP) per capita exceeded $9,000. High economic activity was also recorded in cities such as Navoi, Zarafshan, Samarkand, Kokand, and Andijan. Furthermore, significant growth was observed in several regions, including Tashkent, Navoi, Fergana, and Syrdarya.
Economic activity is also rising in small and medium-sized cities. Termez, Margilan, Chirchik, and Namangan have reached relatively high levels of GRP per capita. At the district level, the largest increases were recorded in the Mirobod, Yakkasaroy, and Chilanzar districts of Tashkent city, where the figures exceeded $10,000.
Accelerated urbanization trends
The analysis further highlights the acceleration of urbanization processes. Over the last five years, the number of areas with high economic activity has risen from 22 to 31, while the number of districts with low activity has decreased sharply. This shift indicates that many regions are moving into a stage of urbanization.
The Center concluded that satellite data allows for the rapid assessment of regional economic development, the identification of new growth points, and the more targeted direction of investments.
