Uzbekistan has been elected as a member of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) for the first time. Uzbekistan’s three-year term on the commission is scheduled to begin on January 1, 2027, and will conclude at the end of 2029.
Established in 1992 and headquartered in Vienna, the CCPCJ serves as a central intergovernmental body within the ECOSOC system. It is responsible for shaping global policies regarding crime prevention, the development of criminal justice standards, and the advancement of the rule of law.
The election process was characterized by high competition within the Asia-Pacific regional group. Initially, five nations – Uzbekistan, China, Japan, India, and Saudi Arabia – vied for four available seats. Although India withdrew its candidacy shortly before the vote, the remaining contest remained intense. Ultimately, Uzbekistan secured its position with the full backing of the council. Other prominent nations elected to the commission during this session include the United States, the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Peru.
Muhammad Valiyev, a deputy of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, emphasized that Uzbekistan intends to be an active participant in advancing the global justice agenda. The nation’s priorities during its membership will include fostering international cooperation against transnational organized crime and promoting the humanization of criminal justice policies. Furthermore, the republic aims to share its own experiences in judicial reform while advocating for preventive measures and the protection of human rights within legal systems.
The deputy also highlighted that Uzbekistan plans to facilitate stronger interaction between the commission and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), along with other specialized UN agencies, to ensure a more integrated approach to global security and justice.
