The resolution, titled "Enhancing the role of parliaments in accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals," was adopted on July 24. It was co-sponsored by 61 UN member states, reflecting broad international support for Uzbekistan's initiatives in sustainable development, social progress and parliamentary diplomacy.
The document highlights the central role of national parliaments in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It identifies improving national legislation, strengthening social protection systems, reducing poverty, promoting decent work, expanding access to quality education and fostering social inclusion among the key responsibilities of legislatures.
The resolution also places particular emphasis on increasing the participation of women and young people in parliamentary activities, making better use of digital transformation, supporting developing countries and strengthening international cooperation.
It further acknowledges the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, held in Tashkent in 2025, as well as the Tashkent Declaration adopted at the gathering. The declaration highlights the role of parliaments in promoting social development and advancing social justice.
The General Assembly calls on UN member states to involve parliaments more actively in implementing and monitoring the 2030 Agenda. It recommends greater parliamentary participation in preparing Voluntary National Reviews, strengthening legislative oversight of national commitments and expanding cooperation with civil society.
The resolution also stresses the need to increase the participation of parliamentarians in major UN international events and to improve national statistical systems for assessing social development indicators.
Ahead of the vote, Uzbekistan's Permanent Mission to the United Nations conducted extensive political and diplomatic consultations with member states. According to the official information, formal consultations and bilateral meetings helped produce a balanced text that took into account the interests of all UN member states.
The adoption of the resolution reflects Uzbekistan's growing engagement within the United Nations and its increasingly active role in multilateral diplomacy. It also recognizes inter-parliamentary cooperation as an important instrument for advancing social justice and achieving sustainable development.
