An extended meeting of the Ecological Party of Uzbekistan was held in Tashkent on Tuesday, Kun.uz correspondent reports.
The decision to create such a party was made on November 14 last year at a meeting of a group of citizens, which included environmental specialists, doctors, scientists, representatives of the educational sphere and various institutions of civil society.
“During the meeting on January 8, a decision was made to create Ecological Party of Uzbekistan, members of the Central Council were elected, the program and the party’s charter were adopted. On the same day, a plenary session was held where members of the Executive Committee of the Central Council, its chairman and vice-chairmen were elected,” the press service of the new party noted.
Ecological party will become a kind of heir to the Ecological Movement of Uzbekistan, which had 15 guaranteed seats in the lower house of the parliament.
The party’s main focus will be to ensure that environmental protection is a matter for every citizen of the country.
As delegates to the congress noted, over-exploitation of natural resources and ignoring environmental problems in the previous era led to the emergence of a number of global and regional environmental problems.
Among them are the drying up of the Aral Sea, desertification, the degradation of land and water resources, the reduction of biological diversity, the formation of huge volumes of industrial, household and other wastes. These problems against the background of ongoing climate change are manifested in our region even brighter and stronger. In this regard, issues of environmental protection and improvement are of particular imporatnce for modern Uzbekistan.
