Uzbekistan plans to build paid tunnels through Kamchik and Takhtakoracha passes

The Republic of Uzbekistan is planning to build paid tunnels through the passes Kamchik (in Pop district, Namangan region) and Takhtakoracha (in Kitab district, Kashkadarya region).

In addition, the issue of constructing the toll roads across Akhangaran and Angren cities of Tashkent region, is under consideration. First Deputy of the State Committee on Roads Shukhrat Nazarov informed journalists about it.

According to Mr. Nazarov, the projects of paid tunnels and roads are implemented on the basis of public-private partnerships and attracting foreign direct investment.

“These facilities are considered to be the objects of attracting investments, constructing roads on a paid basis. All these roads and tunnels will be alternative, the current traffic order will remain,” the representative of the Committee said.

The legal framework for the construction of public-private partnerships is reflected in the laws “On public-private partnership” and “On toll roads”. Draft laws have been developed. “Currently, the documents are coordinated with the ministries and agencies. Within 10-15 days, the bill will be submitted to the government and parliament,” Shukhrat Nazarov noted.

After determining an “optimal route”, investors and contractors will be selected for the first toll road between Tashkent and Samarkand.

In accordance with the governmental decree of December 5, construction of paid highways will begin in the country in 2020.
