Kazakhstan names causes of congestion on the border with Uzbekistan
Outdated checkpoints at the Kazakh-Uzbek border create congestion of trucks from the Kazakh side. In addition, Uzbekistan has strengthened control, which further affected the time of vehicle passage, Tengrinews.kz reports.
“Yes, I agree, there are problems on the Kazakh-Uzbek border. It is mainly because of the sharp increase in trade turnover (fourfold). Our checkpoints were built over 20 years ago; they now require retrofitting and modernization. If the checkpoint is designed for 100 cars per day, 250 are crossing it every day,” Kuat Rakhimov, acting deputy chairman of the State Revenue Committee of the Ministry of Finance of Kazakhstan said.
According to him, there are slowdowns on the Uzbek side. “On the Uzbek side the situation is the same, and when they strengthen the control, we cannot let the cars to their side. As a result, they accumulate on our side,” he noted.
To solve this problem, the committee is working on the reconstruction of Kazakhstan checkpoints. “Now we are working on the reconstruction of the checkpoint “Konysbay”. It is the largest one on the Kazakh-Uzbek border today. We are working on the “Zhibek Zholy” checkpoint and we will carry out work on all the rest this year. It is connected with the infrastructure,” Rakhimov specified.
