Alice Wells praises Uzbekistan’s progress in protecting human rights
On September 24, 2019, at the 74th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov met with Alice Wells, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. State Department Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs.
According to the MFA press service, the parties exchanged views on the outcome of the recent ministerial meeting in the format of “Central Asia – USA” (“C5 + 1”), which allowed to discuss promising areas for the development of multilateral cooperation.
Alice Wells praised the current state of bilateral relations, calling them “full-fledged and comprehensive”. The diplomat welcomed the progress made in Uzbekistan in the field of protecting human rights, interaction with civil society institutions and expressed hope for the continuation of the current dynamics of transformations.
During the meeting, issues of promoting the inter-Afghan peace process were separately considered, the importance of consolidating efforts for the economic, social, and infrastructural reconstruction of Afghanistan was emphasized.
