The interim government of Afghanistan must fulfill its promises in order to be recognized in the international arena, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov at a briefing after a meeting with the Latvian foreign minister.

“It’s true that a completely new reality has emerged in Afghanistan today. Of course, there are different approaches to recognizing or not recognizing the interim government of this country. The issue of recognizing the government can only be achieved through a two-pronged approach. In other words, we need to move forward: the interim government must keep its promises (and there are many of them). These are almost the same conditions and requirements that the international community has.

On the other hand, the international community must encourage any positive steps and changes that are taking place in Afghanistan. It is necessary to work with the government, to meet, to influence, to inform about the views and conditions of the international community. In this way, it is possible to bring views closer and change for the better.

Even in the most difficult times, Uzbekistan has not lost touch with the Afghan delegation. Today we continue trade and economic cooperation. We are talking about the implementation of serious projects in the field of energy and transport communications,” said Abdulaziz Komilov.

The Uzbek foreign minister also reminded that the main task of the international and the European Union today is to prevent humanitarian catastrophe and aggravation of the situation in Afghanistan.

“The common interests of Uzbekistan and Latvia in Afghanistan are in line with the interests of the international community. This, no matter how unnatural it may seem at the moment, is in line with the position of the Afghan interim government. The government is taking a number of steps to rid the country of terrorists. They want to integrate into the regional and international economic community. We need to encourage and support these efforts. At the same time, we must demand that our conditions be met, that violence be prevented, that terrorism be eradicated, and that decent living conditions be created for the Afghan people,” said Kamilov.

On February 8, Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov met with Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs, who is on a working visit to Uzbekistan.

During the meeting, a number of documents on the protection of the rights of citizens of Uzbekistan, working on a temporary basis in Latvia, including the adoption and recruitment on an organizational basis, were approved by the government. A protocol on cooperation and consultations was also signed between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia.
