Terrorist who attempted to kill Islam Karimov in 1999 prosecuted

On February 23, the Mirzo-Ulugbek district court on criminal proceedings announced the verdict against a 53-year-old man who in 1999 was a participant in the assassination attempt on the First President, Islam Karimov.

According to the press service of the Tashkent city court, according to the verdict, the man was found guilty in accordance with Articles 155 (terrorism), 159 (encroachment on the constitutional order of the Republic of Uzbekistan), 161 (sabotage), 164 (robbery), 223 (illegal departure for border or illegal entry into the Republic of Uzbekistan), 242 (organization of a criminal community) and 244-2 (creation, leadership, participation in religious extremist, separatist, fundamentalist or other prohibited organizations) of the Criminal Code and sentenced to life imprisonment.

It should be recalled that on February 16, 1999, a series of terrorist attacks took place in Tashkent, killing 13 people and injuring over a hundred.

Earlier, the press service of the State Security Service reported that in September 2022, a member of the international terrorist organization “Islamic Movement of Turkestan”, who was put on the wanted list 23 years ago, was detained abroad and taken to Tashkent.

He was born in 1969 in the Tashkent region. In early 1998, he went to Chechnya to undergo special training in a militant camp set up by the Jordanian terrorist Khattab, and then joined an international terrorist organization in Afghanistan. In January 1999, on orders of the leaders of the “Islamic Movement of Turkestan”, he arrived in Tashkent, where he attacked the homes of wealthy citizens, transported stolen money and valuables to Afghanistan.

The detainee also took part in terrorist acts in Tashkent on February 16 and March 30, 1999. After that, he fought in the ranks of international terrorist organizations in foreign countries from 1999 to 2006.
