Chairman of “Ezgulik” calls on authorities to pay attention to the issue of imprisoned young men due to a religious song

In an interview with Kun.uz, Chairman of the “Ezgulik” human rights society Abdurakhmon Tashanov spoke about the growing number of people who are imprisoned for saving a nasheed on their phone or sending it to someone, and called on the government to think seriously about this acute situation.

“During the first administration, the moral and legal image of the government was associated with religious extremism. Unfortunately, we are still at the dangerous stage of this trend.

Last year, the “Ezgulik” human rights society received information about the arrest of schoolchildren in the Uchtepa district of Tashkent on charges of extremism. Yes, their sentence was later commuted to a lighter one, but the trend continued and long-term imprisonment of 19-20-year-olds began. Last year, a 19-year-old man was sentenced to 12 years and 3 months. This situation is constantly growing. There must be more cases which have not reached us.

The government should think about it. This is one side of the matter. Legislative analysis and amendments are still to be seen. Big political institutions should work with this, not three or four activists,” the human rights activist said.
