Shavkat Mirziyoyev, WTO DG Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala discuss Uzbekistan's accession to the organization
On September 19, the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting with the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on the sidelines of the 78th UNGA session.
At the meeting, the parties discussed the measures taken for Uzbekistan's early membership in the WTO.
Mirziyoyev emphasized the importance of joining the organization based on the medium and long-term development goals the country has set for itself.
The President of Uzbekistan touched upon the issues of organizing the next meeting of the working group, as well as strengthening the capacity and improving the skills of experts participating in the process.
The Director General of the WTO highly appreciated the measures taken by Uzbekistan to become a member of the organization.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala expressed confidence that the WTO Secretariat fully supports the efforts of Uzbekistan and that the country will join the organization in the near future.
Following the talks, an agreement was reached on accelerating preparations for the next meeting of the working group, improving the qualifications of specialists, and harmonizing Uzbekistan’s legislation with WTO agreements and rules.
