Diesel imports increased sevenfold after GTL plant began production
The import of petroleum products in Uzbekistan continues to rise at a rapid pace. In January-July 2024, gasoline imports increased by more than 1.5 times, and fuel oil imports doubled. Notably, diesel imports have surged 7.3 times in the last two years, following the commencement of diesel production at the GTL plant.
The Customs Committee has launched a database providing information on the most imported goods in Uzbekistan. After analyzing the disclosed data, Kun.uz highlighted the sharp increase in fuel-energy and petroleum product imports.
It was reported that in January-July 2024, Uzbekistan imported $694.2 million worth of fuel-energy and petroleum products. This represents a 52.4% increase compared to the same period last year.
The most significant surge was observed in the import of liquid fuels. While 1,943 tons of liquid fuels were imported in January-July of last year, this figure reached 19,025 tons during the same period this year, marking an increase of 879%, or nearly tenfold.
Fuel oil imports doubled, rising from 416.5 thousand tons to 843.6 thousand tons, an increase of 102.6%.
In January-July, Uzbekistan imported 76.4 million tons of gasoline, which is 28.4 million tons more than the 48 million tons imported during the same period last year, representing a 59.1% increase.
Diesel imports showed a 22.4% increase, with the volume of imports rising from 169 thousand tons to 206.9 thousand tons over seven months.
When comparing diesel imports with January-July 2022 (28.2 thousand tons), there is a 7.3-fold increase.
It's noteworthy that the Uzbekistan GTL plant began producing diesel on June 29, 2022. The plant, built at a cost of $3.42 billion, was expected to produce products that would replace $500 million worth of imports annually.
