Arsenal reportedly eyeing Uzbek defender Abdukodir Khusanov for key defensive role
London’s Arsenal Football Club is showing strong interest in signing Abdukodir Khusanov, a promising young defender currently playing for RC Lens in France’s Ligue 1. The Uzbek international is viewed as a potential long-term replacement for either French center-back William Saliba or Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhães, according to recent reports.
Khusanov’s transfer value is estimated to reach between €30-40 million, as per football experts in France, underscoring his rapid rise in European football. A move to Arsenal could not only boost his career but also enhance his standing in international football, making him a notable presence in the Premier League.
A Rising Star in European Football
Abdukodir Khusanov, a center-back for Ligue 1 club RC Lens and the Uzbekistan national team, has shown significant promise since his early days. He began his career in the youth academy of Uzbek club Bunyodkor, playing there until the age of 18. His professional journey took off in March 2022 when he moved to Belarusian club Energetik-BGU Minsk.
Khusanov made his debut for Energetik-BGU in March 2022 and quickly made an impact, scoring his first goal in May 2022 and contributing two assists in the same match. His outstanding performances led to his inclusion in the International Center for Sports Research's list of the most promising young players in the world in August 2022. That same year, his club finished as runners-up in the Belarusian Premier League, with Khusanov earning a spot on the league’s symbolic team.
The 2023 season saw Khusanov continue to build on his success, as he was once again named among the most promising players under 20. His impressive performances in Belarus caught the attention of RC Lens, which signed him in July 2023 on a four-year contract. Khusanov made history as the first Uzbek player to join a Ligue 1 club. He debuted for Lens in a 1-0 home loss against Metz in September 2023.
Arsenal’s Interest and Khusanov’s Potential Move
Arsenal’s interest in Khusanov comes amid speculation that the club is looking to strengthen its defense. If the transfer proceeds, it would mark a significant milestone in Khusanov’s burgeoning career, positioning him as one of the most valuable exports from Uzbekistan’s football system. The move could also pave the way for a broader representation of Central Asian footballers in top European leagues.
