Uzbekistan Railways to raise freight tariffs by 30% starting December 1

Uzbekistan Railways has announced a 30% increase in freight transport tariffs effective from December 1, 2024. The decision comes as part of an effort to offset rising operational costs related to railcar maintenance and to modernize the company’s freight wagon fleet, according to a statement from the company's press service.

The tariff increase applies specifically to domestic freight services using company-owned wagons, with rates varying depending on the type of railcar — universal, specialized, or tank cars. The company highlighted that the adjustment aims to partially cover expenses associated with maintaining and updating its wagon inventory.

This shift follows a series of structural reforms in Uzbekistan’s railway sector. As part of a presidential decree issued on January 1, 2024, tariffs for the provision of freight wagons and container services transitioned from state-regulated pricing to a market-based mechanism, allowing rates to adjust according to market demand and operational costs.

Earlier this year, passenger ticket prices also rose, with high-speed train fares for the popular “Afrosiyob” service increasing by 20% in January. Ticket prices for other fast trains like “Sharq,” “Nasaf,” and “Uzbekiston” were similarly adjusted. Later, in May, prices for “Afrosiyob” tickets were further raised by 20% for economy class, 30% for business class, and 40% for VIP class seats.
