Panorama Airways scandal: Over 2,500 pilgrims defrauded
A total of 2,558 people have suffered due to the actions of Panorama Airways and Gulbakhor Airways, according to the Committee for the Development of Competition and Protection of Consumer Rights.
“Panorama Airways and Gulbakhor Airways caused damages worth 25 billion UZS to pilgrims, deceiving 2,558 individuals,” the statement read.
The Committee reported that law enforcement agencies are taking action against dishonest tour operators who mislead citizens.
Officials emphasized that the organization of Umrah pilgrimages is regulated by Cabinet of Ministers’ decrees and requires a special license. Currently, only 12 tour operators in Uzbekistan hold the required license.
It is worth recalling that last year, a criminal case was initiated against officials of Panorama Airways. The Transport Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into the airline for failing to take action to return Uzbek citizens from their Umrah trip and for committing other serious violations.
Earlier reports indicated that several thousand Uzbek pilgrims were stranded in Saudi Arabia for several days due to flight delays caused by Panorama Airways. After facing numerous issues, the company reshuffled its management team and repatriated over 3,000 passengers between February 2 and 4. The Tourism Committee later issued a warning to pilgrims and tour agencies.
Kun.uz had previously reported that a single individual was acting as the unofficial head of both Panorama Airways and Gulbakhor Airways.
