Road safety concerns: More than 900 drivers jailed for traffic offenses last year
In 2024, 3,321 drivers in Uzbekistan were prosecuted for violating traffic rules, with 917 of them sentenced to imprisonment. Road accidents during the year claimed 2,203 lives and injured 8,901 people.
According to Aziz Obidov, spokesperson for the Supreme Court, 3,321 drivers were convicted under Article 266 of the Criminal Code (Violation of Traffic Safety Rules or Operation of Vehicles) in 2024.
Of these, 917 were sentenced to imprisonment, while 2,404 received non-custodial punishments.
In the first quarter of 2025 alone, 891 individuals were prosecuted under the same article. Among them, 173 were sentenced to imprisonment, while 718 received non-custodial penalties.
It should be recalled that 9,364 road accidents were officially recorded across the country last year, resulting in 2,203 fatalities and injuries to 8,901 people.
