Tashkent to expand public transport fleet with 200 new electric buses in October

Tashkent will receive 200 new electric buses in October 2025 and an additional 1,000 buses in 2026. As a result, the total number of buses operating in the capital will reach 2,891, with the average route duration expected to be 30 minutes and the annual number of passengers transported projected to reach 750 million.

According to the Ministry of Transport, as part of plans to expand Tashkent’s bus routes to surrounding suburban areas, the purchase of 200 new 12-meter electric buses is scheduled for October. These buses will allow for:

  • the creation of four new bus routes;
  • adjustments to six existing routes;
  • increased frequency on four current routes;
  • the transfer of suburban routes No. 467, 470, 472, 473, and 477 in Tashkent region to the city network under gross-contract terms.

In addition, Tashkent is expected to receive another 1,000 buses in 2026 to further integrate the capital and its agglomeration zones. The planned procurement includes:

  • 30 extra-large buses (18 meters);
  • 500 large buses (12 meters);
  • 470 medium-capacity buses and electric buses (9 meters).

Based on population density, settlements, and newly built residential areas, these buses will operate on 48 routes under gross-contract agreements.

To accommodate the incoming buses and electric buses, three modern depots will be established in route-specific areas close to zero-distance zones, including New Tashkent.

According to the ministry, once these measures are implemented, Tashkent will have:

  • a total of 2,891 buses in operation;
  • an average route duration of 30 minutes;
  • an annual passenger flow of about 750 million.

Earlier, Senator Erkin Gadoev had sent an official inquiry to the Ministry of Transport regarding efforts to reduce traffic congestion in Tashkent and the transition of public transport to a unified metropolitan system. He emphasized that heavy traffic congestion has a serious impact on residents’ daily lives.
