Shavkat Mirziyoyev stresses need for reforms and accountability in healthcare

On November 10, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said that while much is being done to curb inflation and stabilize food prices, a significant portion of people’s income is still being spent on medicine. The president made these remarks during a meeting with medical and pharmaceutical workers.

“In the past five years, specialized medical centers have received UZS 7.5 trillion in funding. They have been equipped with thousands of the most advanced devices. Can any center claim that it lacks medicines? How are these funds, devices, and medicines being used? Unfortunately, only 25 percent of the equipment’s capacity is being utilized,” the head of state said during the meeting held at Tashkent State Medical University.

It was noted that medical centers, as well as district and regional health departments that fail to digitize their operations, establish international partnerships, update clinical protocols, and build modern teams capable of advanced diagnostics, prevention, and treatment, have no future.

The president emphasized the importance of analyzing which neighborhoods or districts have seen an increase or decrease in specific diseases, developing concrete plans to prevent and effectively treat them, and ensuring that national medical centers lead this work with evidence-based approaches. He underlined that making efficient use of high-tech medical equipment – provided at great expense – is now more critical than ever.
