Uzbekistan records sharp rise in EV and hybrid car imports

Imports of electric vehicles to Uzbekistan increased sharply in the first two months of 2026, rising nearly sixfold compared with the same period last year.

According to data published by the Customs Committee, between January and February 2026, Uzbekistan imported 9,698 electric vehicles worth $158.6 million.

During the same period in 2025, the country purchased 1,556 electric vehicles from abroad, with a total value of $18 million. This means the number of imported electric vehicles rose almost six times year-on-year, reflecting rapidly growing demand for cleaner transport.

Imports of gasoline-powered vehicles also increased, though at a much more modest pace.

In January – February 2026, Uzbekistan imported 2,988 gasoline cars worth $55.95 million. In the same period of 2025, the country imported 2,746 vehicles valued at $55.88 million.

While the number of vehicles increased slightly, the total import value remained almost unchanged compared with last year.

Imports of hybrid vehicles also expanded significantly.

In the first two months of 2026, Uzbekistan imported 1,249 hybrid vehicles worth $41.2 million. By comparison, only 70 hybrid vehicles worth $2.1 million were imported during the same period in 2025.

For context, Uzbekistan produced 257,800 passenger cars in 2025.

Under the national development program “Uzbekistan – 2030”, the country aims to significantly expand its automotive output over the coming years. Passenger car production is expected to reach 550,000 units in 2027, 700,000 units in 2028, and 800,000 units by 2029, with a long-term target of 1 million vehicles annually.
