Uzhydromet warns of flood risks in nine regions due to expected heavy rainfall
The Center for Hydrometeorological Services (Uzhydromet) has issued an urgent warning regarding the risk of mudflows and flooding in the foothill and mountainous regions of Uzbekistan from April 18–23. The alert is driven by forecasted heavy rainfall expected across much of the republic during this period.
According to meteorologists, the accumulation of rainwater poses a significant threat of localized flooding in both rural and urban settlements. The danger of mudflows is particularly high in specific districts of Kashkadarya, Surkhandarya, Samarkand, Navoi, Jizzakh, Tashkent, Namangan, Fergana, and Andijan regions. Notable urban areas included in the warning zone are the cities of Angren and Almalyk in Tashkent region, as well as Khanabad in Andijan region.
Uzhydromet has called upon citizens residing in or traveling through these areas to exercise extreme caution. This request specifically extends to local residents, tourists visiting mountain resorts, and drivers navigating highland passes.
The current warning follows a previous alert issued for April 14–17, during which moist and cool air masses moved into the country. That earlier weather system brought a noticeable drop in temperatures and significant precipitation. In the high-altitude areas of the Jizzakh region, specifically within the Zomin and Bakhmal districts, the rain turned to snow on April 16.
Authorities emphasize that the saturation of the soil from previous rainfall increases the likelihood of rapid runoff. Emergency services remain on standby to manage potential water accumulation and ensure the safety of those in the affected administrative districts.
