Migration Agency recovers $127,000 for Uzbek labor migrants in Russia
More than 100 Uzbek citizens working in Russia have begun receiving long-overdue wages following a significant intervention by the Migration Agency of Uzbekistan. The workers had reportedly gone four months without receiving their salaries and were also deprived of essential food supplies.
According to the Migration Agency’s press service, the total debt owed by the employers reached approximately 24 million rubles – roughly $324,000. Among the group of workers, several were also found to be residing and working in the Russian Federation without legal status. Faced with dire conditions and mounting debt, the employees filed formal complaints with the Migration Agency.
In response, agency representatives in Russia enlisted legal counsel to represent the workers, while the Consulate General used diplomatic channels and issued an official note to the relevant Russian authorities. These coordinated efforts led to the initiation of a criminal case against the employers under the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation for the non-payment of wages.
As of the latest update, 105 Uzbek citizens have been paid a total of 9,403,000 rubles – approximately $127,000. The remaining outstanding balance of 23,966,000 rubles, or roughly $323,000, is expected to be settled by May 15.
In addition to securing financial compensation, the agency ensured that the workers were once again provided with necessary food supplies. For those found to be in the country illegally, the Migration Agency facilitated their return to Uzbekistan and provided them with additional material assistance.
