Workplace accidents claim 62 lives in Uzbekistan during first quarter of 2026
The Ministry of Employment and Poverty Reduction has released a sobering report detailing labor-related safety in the first quarter of 2026. According to the ministry, 198 workplace accidents were officially recorded across the country during the first three months of the year.
The ministry’s data reveals the severity of these incidents, noting that nine were group accidents, 139 resulted in serious consequences, and 49 involved fatalities. In total, 223 people were affected by these occurrences. Among the victims, 146 individuals sustained serious injuries, 15 suffered minor injuries, and 62 workers lost their lives while performing their professional duties.
A sectoral analysis shows that the industrial and construction fields remain the most hazardous for employees. The industrial sector recorded the highest number of incidents with 71 cases, followed closely by the construction industry with 54. Other sectors reporting accidents included agriculture and water management with nine cases, transport with eight, and the trade and services sector, which also recorded eight. Even traditionally lower-risk fields were not exempt, as six accidents occurred in education and four within the healthcare system.
Geographically, the capital city of Tashkent reported the highest frequency of workplace incidents, accounting for 44 cases. Other regions with significant numbers included Surkhandarya region with 36 accidents, Tashkent region with 29, and Navoi with 18. Bukhara and Andijan recorded 16 and 15 cases respectively, while Samarkand and Syrdarya both saw 13 incidents. Lower but still notable figures were reported in Karakalpakstan, Fergana, and Kashkadarya, each recording 10 cases, followed by Namangan with seven, and Khorezm and Jizzakh with five cases each.
The Ministry of Employment and Poverty Reduction emphasized that labor safety must become a non-negotiable priority at every workplace to prevent further tragedies. These latest figures follow a difficult year for labor safety in 2025, during which 248 people died in work-related accidents. Last year, the State Labor Inspectorate investigated and registered a total of 849 incidents, suggesting that while the quarterly figures are lower, the inherent risks in key economic sectors remain high.
