Shavkat Mirziyoyev sends condolences to Xi Jinping over deadly coal mine explosion
President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has sent a message of condolence to the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, following a devastating coal mine explosion that resulted in significant loss of life and injuries in Shanxi Province.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev expressed his deep sympathy and support to the families and relatives of the victims, while wishing a speedy recovery to all those injured in the disaster.
The tragedy occurred on the evening of May 22 at the Liushenyu coal mine, located in Qinyuan County of northern China’s Shanxi Province. A sudden gas explosion ripped through the facility, killing at least 90 people. A total of 247 workers were underground when the blast took place.
According to Chinese state media, a massive rescue operation involving around 750 emergency workers has been underway for more than 20 hours. Local officials have warned that the death toll could still rise, as the fate of several miners remains unknown.
The incident stands as one of the deadliest disasters to hit China’s mining industry in the last decade.
