Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Vladimir Putin launch construction of Uzbekistan’s first nuclear power unit
President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Russian President Vladimir Putin have officially launched the construction works for the first energy unit of an integrated nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan.
The announcement was made by both heads of state during a ceremony held in Saint Petersburg. The event also featured the participation of Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who joined via a video link.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev expressed his gratitude to President Putin and Director General Grossi for their support in implementing this strategically significant project. He also specifically recognized the dedication and high-level expertise of the Uzbek and Russian specialists involved in the initiative.

The construction of the nuclear power plant is expected to usher in a new era in the technological, industrial, and scientific development of Uzbekistan, providing a solid foundation for the establishment and advancement of the country's atomic energy sector.

Significantly, the project integrates modern technologies from both small modular reactor generation and large-scale power engineering.

President Mirziyoyev emphasized that safety remains the absolute priority of the project. He noted that the construction and preparation for the commissioning of the plant are being carried out in strict accordance with international standards and advanced engineering solutions, all under the continuous supervision of the IAEA.

Both parties expressed confidence that this major energy project will further strengthen the strategic partnership and alliance between Uzbekistan and Russia.
