Solar and wind power generation in Uzbekistan rises 28 percent compared to last year

Electricity generation from Uzbekistan’s solar and wind power plants has surpassed 5 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) since the beginning of the year, marking a 28% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the milestone was officially reached on June 8 at 13:00, just 25 days after the country hit its previous billion-kilowatt-hour threshold. This rapid pace broke the prior record set on May 15, when it took 24 days to generate the preceding 1 billion kWh. The accelerating output highlights the expanding capacity of Uzbekistan’s renewable energy sector; by comparison, it took the country 187 days to reach the 5 billion kWh mark in 2025.

Solar photovoltaic plants contributed the largest share of this clean energy mix, generating 3.048 billion kWh, or just over 60% of the total cumulative output from non-hydro renewables. Wind power farms accounted for the remaining 1.952 billion kWh.

The surge in solar and wind generation has yielded substantial economic and environmental benefits. It enabled the national power grid to save approximately 1.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas and prevented 2.9 million tons of harmful emissions from entering the atmosphere. Reflecting the recent surge in capacity, 0.6 million tons of these emissions were avoided just since mid-May.

When accounting for the country's hydroelectric facilities, which supplied an additional 3.12 billion kWh to the national grid, Uzbekistan's total eco-friendly electricity generation reached 8.12 billion kWh.

Data from the Ministry of Energy indicates that this combined clean energy output is sufficient to cover the average six-month electricity consumption of 6.6 million households, or the full annual needs of 3.3 million households. Factoring in hydropower capabilities, total natural gas savings climbed to 2.1 billion cubic meters, while overall prevented atmospheric emissions reached 4.6 million tons.
