President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced the plans on October 16 during an open dialogue with investors in the fuel and energy sector.

More than $2 billion has been invested in modernizing Uzbekistan’s electricity networks over the past five years. Mirziyoyev said the next phase would focus on further upgrading the grid and expanding energy storage infrastructure.

Most of the planned infrastructure projects will be located in Karakalpakstan and the Bukhara, Jizzakh, Samarkand, Namangan, Kashkadarya and Tashkent regions.

The president said the government would prioritize integrated projects combining electricity generation, energy storage and grid development. It also plans to work with investors to develop pumped-storage hydropower plants, which can store energy for extended periods.

“Uzbekistan does not intend to limit itself to the domestic energy market,” Mirziyoyev said.

He added that a project to export green electricity to Europe via the Caspian Sea, in cooperation with Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, was moving into the implementation phase.

Afghanistan and South Asia are also emerging as potential markets for Uzbek electricity exports.
