The project will be implemented in two stages, Yuldosh Yusupov, deputy chairman of the board of Tashkent Metro, told Kun.uz.
The first stage provides for the construction of a 6.5-kilometre section from Mingurik station to the Southern Railway Station. The second stage will extend the line by another 5.5 kilometers from the Southern Railway Station to the Chilonzor clothing market, bringing the total length of the new route to 12 kilometers.
According to Yusupov, the new line is intended to reduce congestion on the Chilonzor direction, shorten train intervals and ease overcrowding, improving passenger comfort.
Daily metro ridership is expected to rise from the current 1.1 million to 1.8 million passengers once the project is completed.
“Daily ridership stood at 250,000–300,000 passengers in 2021. Thanks to the improved conditions, the extension of existing lines and the increase in the number of stations, the number of daily metro users has now exceeded 1.1 million,” Yusupov said.
Akbarali Khaydarov, head of Tashkent Metro’s traffic service, said the number of trainsets in the system is expected to increase from 40 to 87 by the end of 2026, adding 47 new trainsets to the fleet.
The expansion is expected to help reduce waiting times during peak hours. Train intervals currently stand at 1.5–2 minutes on the Chilonzor line, four minutes on the Yunusobod line, three minutes on the Uzbekistan line and 7–8 minutes on the elevated ring line.
The Mingurik–Chilonzor clothing market, or Ippodrom, metro line project was presented to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on May 13.
Under a presidential resolution signed on May 15, the preliminary design and detailed cost estimates for the project are to be completed by the end of 2026 and submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers for approval by February 2027.
